NFR Holds National Consultation and Validation Conference on Model Comprehensive Fisheries Management Ordinance
Cebu City (Feb 25) – The NGOs for Fisheries Reform (NFR) held a back to back regional consultation and national validation conference of its model Comprehensive Fisheries Management Ordinance (CFMO) in Cebu late this February. PRESS RELEASE: CSOs to PNoy:Take on the Plight of Women Fisherfolk
8 March 2011, Quezon City- In celebration of the International Women’s Day, a group of 12 non-government organizations (NGOs) called on President Noynoy Aquino to protect women fisherfolks from the impacts of climate change. For an archipelago that is composed of more than 7,000 islands, fishing communities in low lying areas are vulnerable to strong typhoons and wave surges.

NFR Holds First Municipal Mayors Consultation on NFRs Fisheries Management Framework
Quezon City (Feb 17) – “An LGU-CSO partnership towards protection and management of municipal fisheries,” that was the agreement forged during the NGOs for Fisheries Reform’s Fisheries Management Framework National Validation Conference held last February 17, 2011 at Casa Pura Hotel, Quezon City. The activity was attended by local executives and other municipal government representatives, particularly the Mayor, the Municipal Agriculture Officer and a Sangguniang Bayan councilor.

Fisherfolk Fear Displacement in Casiguran, Aurora
The NGOs for Fisheries Reform (NFR) in collaboration with PAKISAMA and the Parish of Nuestra Señora de Salvacion in Brgy. Bianoan under Fr. Joefran Talaban conducted a Fisherfolk Settlement Forum last August 13, 2010 in the Municipality of Casiguran in the Province of Aurora. The forum was a product of NFR’s critical engagement against the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (APECO), where fishing communities are threatened by eviction.

NFR Presents Municipal Water Delineation in International Forum
The NGOs for Fisheries Reform (NFR) participated as one of the panel presenters in the World Small Scale Fisheries Congress (WSFC) held in Montien Riverside Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand last October 18-22, 2010. ‘The WSFC gave us an opportunity to discuss with our colleagues from different countries the issue on municipal water delineation in the Philippines,’ Dennis Calvan of the NFR said.

Fisherfolk Rally Behind MPA Bill
During the culmination of NFRs nationwide series of consultations on the Marine Area Protected Bill, fisherfolk representatives from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao signed a resolution urging the Congress to pass the bill mandating the establishment of a marine protected area in each coastal city or municipality.
